Taking steps to prevent and control heart disease – the leading cause of death in this country – can greatly reduce your risk. To prevent heart disease, do four simple things:

1. Eat healthy. Eat foods that are high in fiber, but low in trans fat, saturated fat, and sodium. Eat at least five fruits and vegetables everyday.

2. Exercise regularly. Try to stay active for at least 30 to 60 minutes a day. Staying active does not mean you have to have an intense workout everyday; it just means to keep moving.

3. See your doctor regularly. Regular doctor’s visits can help recognize warning signs.

4. Don’t smoke. If you do smoke, quit. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease.
